In Memoriam – Nigel Smith

It is with deep regret that Aces Wheelchair Basketball Club today learned of the passing of Nigel Smith.

Nigel was a founding member of Aces back in 1984 and played a key role in Aces successes throughout his years with the club either as a player and/or coach. Even today, Nigel’s impact on the club can be seen on court with a number of the senior squad being coached by Nigel as Juniors.

Away from Aces Nigel spent 16 years in the GB Men’s team, 4 as captain. In that time he won a Paralympic Silver medal in Atlanta 1996, Wold Championship Silver and a European Championship Gold.

Nigel also saw success on the international stage as assistant coach to the GB Men’s team which saw a Paralympic Silver medal from Atlanta 1996, a World Championship Silver and a European Gold medal. His last involvement on the International stage came when he was appointed as joint Head Coach of the GB Women’s side alongside close friend and long time teammate Joe Jayaratne.

Nigel was well know within the Wheelchair Basketball community and will be missed by all that knew him

Everyone at Aces Wheelchair Basketball Club would like to take this opportunity to send their condolences to Nigel’s family and friends at this time.
